Learning from SSP Vending Machines

Two graphics side by side. Both have purple/green/blue gradient background & white NHRC, NSSSP, & NASEN logos toward bottom. Content is framed by thin white lines w/ white “sparkle” shape in corners. Image 1: Over lime green text box up top, white font reads, “Vending machines”. Below this at right is purple cloud-like shape outlined in blue w/ white font reading, “También disponible en Español”. Below this is vending machine graphic & graphic of newspaper stand, both filled w/ harm reduction and other health care supplies. White copy below this reads, “A tool for distributing life-saving harm reduction equipment”. Image 2: Over purple text box, white font reads, “Máquinas expendedoras”. Same vending machine & newspaper stand graphics below this. White font reads, “Una herramienta para distribuir equipos de reducción de dañ os que salvan vidas”.

Vending machines can provide additional opportunities for SSPs and other harm reduction organizations to connect people who use drugs to life-saving harm reduction equipment, including naloxone, fentanyl test strips, and hygiene items. NHRC, in collaboration with our partners at RTI International and the North American Syringe Exchange Network (NASEN), have created fact sheets in Spanish and English highlighting the experiences of 12 Syringe Services Programs (SSPs) that have implemented vending machines. The fact sheets include information about funding sources, challenges and opportunities, advantages, and more.
