Supporting Choice and Autonomy: Person Centered Care and Tobacco Harm Reduction

Training description: Harm reduction recognizes the importance of practicing a person centered approach to our services when we are looking to incorporate tobacco harm reduction into formal recovery and substance use treatment programs. A tobacco harm reduction person centered practice requires providers to engage in a systematic, holistic and empathetic approach that addresses both participants and organizational needs regarding their current tobacco use by creating spaces free of stigma, one of the primary barriers to any sustainable behavior change.

Training objectives:

  1. Explore how to assess readiness and tailor approaches to individual participants’ needs.
  2. Learn how to provide accurate, person centered THR education and address common misconceptions.
  3. Discuss how and when to integrate tobacco harm reduction into existing services and group discussions.
  4. Address barriers such as limited resources and skepticism through education and advocacy.
