This one-day training is an intermediate course with an emphasis on skills building. Workshop participants have an opportunity to practice Motivational Interviewing (MI) and engage and support people living with or at risk of acquiring hepatitis C (HCV).  This course will review the Motivational Interviewing techniques, including how to recognize and reinforce change talk to address client ambivalence; explore client resistance related to HCV prevention and care; and discuss strategies to manage client resistance to HCV prevention and care.


To use Motivational interviewing within a harm reduction framework and engage individuals living with or at-risk for hepatitis C (HCV) in prevention, care, treatment and other harm reduction services.


Training Objectives:

By the end of the training, participants will be able to:

  1. Recall key points of HCV information to share with clients.
  2. Describe the spirit of Motivational Interviewing.
  3. Explain the purpose of Motivational Interviewing.
  4. Practice using MI strategies (open-ended questions, affirmations, reflective listening, and summary) to elicit and reinforce change talk surrounding HCV prevention, care and treatment.
  5. Recognize change talk related to HCV prevention, care and treatment.
  6. Reinforce change talk related to HCV prevention, care and treatment.
  7. Apply information exchange with an MI-approach (i.e., Elicit-Provide-Elicit) in response to individuals’ HCV concerns and questions about prevention, care and treatment.


Prerequisites: This is an intermediate course. Participants registering for this course should have prior training in Motivational Interviewing, Harm Reduction Approach, and/or HCV Basics (in-person or webinar).


Audience: Health and human service providers, peer workers, front line, program managers and coordinators who work with people living with or at-risk for acquiring hepatitis C (HCV).
