A Message from the National Harm Reduction Conference Team
The national Harm Reduction Coalition has engaged in an intentional process in our decisions about the National Harm Reduction Conference (HarmRed20) scheduled for October of this year. We took into consideration the safety and health of our community and centered input from the local organizing group in Puerto Rico. Additional considerations required us to think beyond the current moment to the longer-term impact of COVID-19.
After thoughtful deliberation, we have decided to postpone #HarmRed20. We are not canceling the conference; we are doing what harm reductionists do best; we are pivoting and responding to the emerging conditions. The timing is shifting, but the commitment to our movement and specifically the Puerto Rican community will not waver.
We want to give our heartfelt thanks to Rafi Torruella from Intercambios and the local organizing group for bringing their vision, knowledge, and magic to the planning process.
We understand that there are many questions, and in the coming weeks, we will provide detailed information about registration refunds, abstract submissions, scholarship applications, and exhibitor booths.
While we will not see each other in person this October, we will find creative and meaningful ways of being in community and supporting one another. When the time is right, we will gather for the panels, workshops, roundtables, fashion show, dance party, soccer game, all the magical, life-changing conversations that take place in the corridors between sessions, and the late-night talks between old friends and new comrades. When the time is right, we will hold each other again.

La Coalición Nacional de Reducción de Daños ha priorizado un proceso intencional para la toma de decisiones en cuanto a la Conferencia Nacional de Reducción de Daños (HarmRed20), programada para octubre de este año. Así que, para tomar esta decisión sobre #HarmRed20, priorizamos la seguridad y la salud de nuestra comunidad y nos centramos en las reflexiones del grupo organizador local en Puerto Rico. Otras consideraciones adicionales nos obligaron a pensar más allá del momento actual y considerar el impacto de COVID-19 a largo plazo.
Después de considerarlo con detenimiento, hemos decidido posponer #HarmRed20. No estamos cancelando la conferencia; estamos haciendo lo que mejor hacemos quienes nos dedicamos a la reducción de daños: estamos adaptándonos y respondiendo a las condiciones emergentes. La fecha va a cambiar, pero el compromiso con nuestro movimiento social y, específicamente, con la comunidad de Puerto Rico no perderá su firmeza en lo absoluto.
Queremos extender nuestro profundo agradecimiento a Rafi Torruella de Intercambios y al grupo organizador local por contribuir su visión, conocimiento y magia al proceso de planificación.
Entendemos que hay muchas preguntas y, en las próximas semanas, compartiremos información detallada sobre los reembolsos de las inscripciones, los resúmenes enviados, las solicitudes de becas y las mesas de exhibición.
Aunque no nos veamos en persona en octubre, buscaremos formas creativas y profundas para ser y apoyarnos como comunidad. Cuando llegue el momento correcto, nos encontraremos en los paneles, los talleres, las mesas redondas, el desfile de modas, la fiesta con baile, el juego de fútbol y todas las conversaciones mágicas que nos cambian las vidas en esos pasillos, entre sesión y sesión, al igual que las conversas hasta las tantas de la noche con viejxs amigxs y nuevxs camaradas. Cuando llegue el momento correcto, nos abrazaremos otra vez.
