Good Times at the Museum of Sex

Hepatitis C Pre-Conference Event

On March 19 the Harm Reduction Coalition hosted a networking event at the Museum of Sex on Fifth Avenue in New York City.  The event was held the evening before the New York City 2012 Statewide Viral Hepatitis Conference. The Harm Reduction Coalition wanted to provide an informal networking setting for Hepatitis and HIV advocates that would normally not be in the same circles.  Hepatitis C (HCV) is a growing public health concern. It is spread in very similar ways as HIV — notably through shared use of needles to inject drugs. A third of HIV positive persons are co-infected with HCV.

This Harm Reduction Coalition pre-conference event gave the HIV/Hepatitis advocate community an opportunity to connect with advocates in both movements.  Representatives from  Iris House, National Association of People with AIDS, Latino Commission on AIDS , Village Care, VOCAL-NY, Citi Wide Harm Reduction, African Services Committee, New York Harm Reduction Educators  , Lower East Side Harm Reduction, GMHC, Harlem United and other HIV and Harm Reduction organizations attended the event. Our keynote speaker was Dr. Gregory Dore, head of the Viral Hepatitis Clinical Research Program at the Kirby Institute in Sydney Australia.
