Organizational Overview

National Harm Reduction Coalition (NHRC) is a national advocacy and capacity-building organization that promotes health and justice for people and communities affected by drug use. National Harm Reduction Coalition creates spaces for dialogue and action that help heal the harms caused by racialized drug policies. Our efforts advance harm reduction policies, practices, and programs that address the adverse effects of drug use including overdose, HIV, hepatitis C, addiction, and incarceration. We work to uphold every person’s right to health and well-being, and their competence to participate in the public policy dialogue. 

Project Overview

Introduction to the project:

NHRC seeks an experienced consultant to carry out specific deliverables associated with the National Harm Reduction Conference. This consultant will act as liaison between the event planning company and NHRC conference organizing  team to ensure successful conference systems are in place and create experiences that center attendee health and well-being of attendees.

Indigenous folks, LGBTQ+ folks, and people with lived experience in drug use and/or sex work are strongly encouraged to submit proposals.

Requirements and Scope of Work

A successful proposal will address the following questions: 

(1) how would you approach creating a work plan for your support?
(2) what is your hourly or daily rate?
(3) what parts of your specific experience would be most relevant for this consultancy. 

Additionally include a budget that addresses the area described below, examples of previous work, and a resume that reflects related experience. We expect the consultant to plan for roughly 12-20 hours per week.

Responsibilities:

  • Advise Communications Department in the creation of conference editorial  calendar, distribution of marketing materials, and development of  strategies for increasing conference visibility.  
  • In collaboration with Finance, manage the conference budget; maintain documentation of expenses and review  variance reports with the Finance Department.  
  • Collaborates with community experts to develop safety plans to ensure the well-being  of most vulnerable conference attendees, including sex workers, people with lived  experiences, and ensures that accommodations are made to make the conference  accessible and welcoming. 
  • Create and distribute post-conference evaluations for attendees, closeout activities,  and incorporate feedback from staff, attendees, board of directors, and other  stakeholders into upcoming convenings 
  • Creates final reports that include data summary from evaluations and financial  overview 
  • Weekly and, as needed, coordinate calls with supervisor on  deliverables as
  • described above.
  • Routine tracking and collaboration using Asana. 
  • Monthly billing that includes a summary of work completed that month.
  • Additional duties, as required 

Criteria for Selection- Applicants will be selected based on the following criteria:

  • Candidate must be reliable, flexible, people-oriented, patient, and demonstrate  initiative and responsibility 
  • Logistically-oriented systems-thinker, with strong interpersonal skills  Displayed experience with project management 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability and willingness to be hands-on and creatively solve problems as they arise 
  • Detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks  effectively and meet deadlines 
  • Resourceful and have the ability to anticipate needs 
  • Comfortable with technology, able to triage IT issues, and address basic IT support  needs 
  • Strong working knowledge of GSuite and Microsoft suite, required 
  • Experience with database management and Asana or project management tools, a  plus 
  • Previous experience with designing and facilitating large convenings and conferences.
  • Demonstrated communication and relationship building skills with individuals and groups.
  • Strength of equity lens, commitment to undoing systemic societal and workplace oppression, and skill navigating complex dynamics around identity.
  • Track record of exercising the highest level of confidentiality and judgment.
  • Experience leading hard conversations in a way that does not cause harm.
  • Embodiment of values that align with HRC values including racial and gender equity.

Timeline: August 1, 2022 to December 31, 2022

Budget: Total budget is $15,000

  • References: Include three previous clients and/or employers that NHRC may reach out to as references, including their contact information.
