SUMMARY:Lighthouse Learning Series: QTBIPOC Empowerment in Harm Reduction
DESCRIPTION:Starting in January 2023 and running until April 2023, we will be covering a series of queer harm reduction topics with the goal of creating a more inclusive movement.\nPriority is given to those living and working in New York due to program scope. However, the series will be held virtually and is open to all those who would like to build on their harm reduction knowledge to provide better services to LGB/TGNC+ folks!\nSession description: This session will be an introductory conversation about BIPOC empowerment in harm reduction.  Topics covered will include how senses of personal meaning are created and the role of language and storytelling as it relates to personal empowerment.  Additionally, we will discuss the importance of curiosity and nuance when supporting people who identify with commonly misunderstood experiences like suicide and self-harm.\nFacilitator bios: \nNze Okoronta (they/them) is a queer, Nigerian person located in Madison, WI.  Nze is known for work surrounding culturally responsive peer-led crisis support, crisis alternatives, peer-run respites & warmlines, & harm reduction program design and implementation.  They are an outspoken advocate for informed choice in psychiatric care, intersections of racial bias and medical trauma within behavioral health treatment systems & recognizing and preventing institutional harm.\nTim Saubers (he/him) got his start as a Wisconsin Certified Peer Specialist in 2016 and has worked in direct support and supervisory roles. He previously managed Wisconsin’s Certified Peer Specialist and Certified Parent Peer Specialist state certification programs. Currently, he serves as the Program Coordinator for Workforce Development at the Peer Recovery Center of Excellence while also providing consultation centered on curriculum and exam development, research, and programmatic design. Additionally, Tim sits on a variety of state and national committees and workgroups, including serving as Vice President of the board of the National Association of Peer Supporters, among others.
