Development Intern

Harm Reduction Coalition is a national advocacy and capacity-building organization that promotes the health and dignity of individuals and communities impacted by drug use. We encourage people who use (or used to use) drugs, current or former sex workers, people of color, women, members from the LGBTQIA communities, those who have experienced housing insecurity, people who have received harm reduction services, and people living with HIV/AIDS and/or hepatitis C to join our team.

Location: East Coast Office – 22 West 27th Street, New York NY
Term: Fall 2017 – Spring 2018 or Fall 2017
Hours: 10-15 hours per week – flexible schedule, some remote hours
Reports to: Erica Poellot, Director of Development

Purpose: The Harm Reduction Coalition seeks a Development Intern to assist with grant writing, communications, funder relationships, and fundraising event activities to increase the visibility and funding base of the organization.
Description: The Development Intern will support the Director of Development to identify prospective funding opportunities, draft grant proposals, maintain relationships with existing funders, and organize fundraising events to support the work of Harm Reduction Coalition. The Development Intern will learn applied skills that will impact the current and future ability to expand harm reduction work.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research on prospective individual, foundation, and corporate donors
  • Support the planning of organizational special events, including online fundraising activities and in-person events from start to finish; this may include drafting promotional flyers, invitations, e-mails to our existing supporters, logistics of in-person events…
  • Maintain grant and donor database (Salesforce), including updating records of our supporters
  • Communicate with individual donors, including drafting donor/funder acknowledgements and making “Thank You” phone calls
  • Administrative tasks to support fundraising efforts
  • Other duties as needed

Specifically, development interns will gain:

  • An overview of non-profit fundraising, donor communications, and event planning
  • Proficiency in Salesforce, our grant and donor database, and experience in a small, but fast-paced non-profit organization
  • An introduction to the field of harm reduction and drug policy reform

Required Skills:

  • An interest and commitment to improving the health and wellness of people who use drugs; familiarity with harm reduction and syringe exchange programs a plus
  • Possess strong communication, organization, and computer skills
  • Show a willingness to perform administrative tasks with enthusiasm and high attention to detail
  • Possess an interest in a career in the nonprofit sector – particularly in event planning, development and fundraising
