What we do

DOPE Project Logo Got NaloxoneThe DOPE Project conducts regular naloxone trainings at syringe exchanges and drop-in programs in San Francisco. To receive a copy of our monthly schedule or request a training at your agency, please contact Eliza Wheeler, Project Manager – (510) 444.6969 x16

In addition to collaborating with the San Francisco Department of Public Health on the innovative Naloxone Distribution Program, which provides overdose education and take-home naloxone prescriptions to syringe exchange participants, the DOPE Project works closely with community based organizations, syringe exchange programs, and local health jurisdictions to:

  • Advocate for policies that support overdose prevention and treatment efforts in the Bay Area and throughout California;
  • Provide capacity building services to agencies starting their own overdose education and naloxone prescription programs; and
  • Provide trainings for staff and participants.
What we teach

The DOPE Project offers a basic and comprehensive training on overdose for staff, residents, and clients in SRO hotels, shelters, treatment programs, and other community settings. The training runs between one and two hours, but can be modified to meet your needs. We teach:

  •  What causes an overdose
  •  How to recognize an overdose
  •  What to do if you see an overdose, including rescue breathing and naloxone administration
  •  What NOT to do if you see an overdose
  •  How to prevent overdose

In December 2001, the DOPE Project began performing overdose education in San Francisco shelters, jails, treatment programs, and single room occupancy hotels. Since November 2003, we have engaged in an exciting collaboration with the San Francisco Department of Public Health—the Naloxone Distribution Program—at local needle exchange sites (naloxone is an opiate antagonist traditionally administered by paramedics to temporarily reverse the effects of an opiate overdose). In June 2005, the DOPE Project became a program of the Harm Reduction Coalition.

Trainings for agencies funded by the City and County of San Francisco and SRO hotel trainings are provided free of charge. For trainings in other settings, please contact us for information on training rates. We offer continuing education units (CEUs) to Certified Addiction Treatment Specialists through the CA Association of Alcohol and Drug Educators, to RNs through the Board of Registered Nursing, and LCSWs and MFTs through the CA Board of Behavioral Sciences Provider #PCE 3440.
