New York State 2017 August Overdose Awareness and Action Month

In August we are promoting events across New York all month long to address the significant increases in overdose deaths in the past year. We will be ending the month on August 31st, International Overdose Awareness Day, with a protest funeral march starting at Harm Reduction Coalition.

Memorial and Funeral Procession March to NYC Morgue on International Overdose Awareness Day

When: August 31st, 9:30 am to 1 pm

Where: Meet at Harm Reduction Coalition Office, (22 West 27th Street, 5th Floor), and march to NYC Morgue at Bellevue Hospital (462 1st Avenue)

Why: Overdose prevention advocates unite in their grief to demand more action from local and State government to decrease drug overdose deaths. There were 1,374 drug overdose deaths in NYC in 2016, a 46% increase from the previous year. Advocates will march with the Demolition Brass Band in a large funeral procession across midtown Manhattan to the NYC Morgue to memorialize New Yorkers who have died of overdose and to demand the immediate expansion of overdose prevention services and implement innovative new approaches that will reach people most likely to die of an overdose.

What to bring: Wear black to symbolize grief and mourning. Bring black umbrellas and photographs or mementos of loved ones who have died.

Who: Drug Policy Alliance, BOOM! Health, Harm Reduction Coalition, Housing Works, VOCAL New York (other groups and advocates are welcome)
