Hiawatha Collins is Harm Reduction Coalition’s Harm Reduction Specialist. He coordinates the Harm Reduction Peer Workers Foundational Training Program and works with the Peer Network of New York and the Hepatitis C Peer Navigator. He has over a decade of harm reduction experience in capacities starting from the outreach worker/syringe exchanger to assisting in the implementation of the Expanded Syringe Access Programs (ESAP). Along the way he has been an HIV/HCV tester, Harm Reduction Case Manager, and a community organizer working with diverse populations including people who use drugs, sex workers, the homeless, the formerly incarcerated, individuals with a mental health diagnosis, and LGBTQI people. Hiawatha has been the leader of the Peer Network of New York from its inception and he is an active Board Member of VOCAL NY. Hiawatha has previously worked as a consultant with the City of New York’s Health Department for a little over six years where he worked in Overdose Prevention, access to Buprenorphine and as a Harm Reduction Specialist at Community Access, where he spent three years working.
